Chapter 43
Cynthia POV
Walking down the road with Asher after we left the hospital, I keep glancing at him occasionally, thinking of how to get rid of this dead silence. He hasn't said a word since we left the hospital, and it's already driving me nuts. I understand that he is worried about his sister, but he should at least talk to me, right?
"Aren't you supposed to be in the office now?" He suddenly asks as we stop at the side of the road, and I turn to face him.
"Hmm. I had to rush down here to check on Adelie. Uhm... Are you okay?" I ask him, and he nods his head.
"Yes, I'm fine," He replies to me casually, but I can see through his eyes that he's not fine. Could it be because of what happened to his sister?
"Are you hungry? Do you want us to go to a restaurant and get you something to eat?" He suddenly stops and asks me, and I quickly nod my head since I really want to hang out with him.
"I think there's a restaurant close by here, I'll check the Google map," He says before he brings the phone out from his pocket, but his countenance changes to a deep frown the moment he sees the screen of the phone. "What happened? Is everything alright?" I ask him worriedly, and he tilts his head to look at me as a smile lace up his lips.Material © NôvelDrama.Org.
"Yes, everything is fine. Come on, let's go already," He suddenly holds my hand and starts leading the way, while I trail behind him even if I'm not convinced yet.
After strolling for about five minutes, we finally arrive at the restaurant which I must confess it's really nice for a mini restaurant, and when I finally get to taste their food, I must confess that their food too is nice and delicious. Silence assumes the atmosphere, and I can feel his gaze all over me, making me wonder why he's staring at me.
"Uhm, Asher..."
"Hmm?" He raises his eyebrow, and I bite my bottom lip.
"If you need anyone to talk to, I'm always here, ok?" I say to him, and he nods his head after staring at me for a few seconds.
"Sure," He replies to me.
"Uhm... Our company's end of the year party is coming up in a week. I am officially inviting you to the party. Will you come?" I ask him, and he nods his head.
"Why not? Of course, I will be there," He replies to me sharply, and I slowly nod my head. The way he talks to me is pretty weird, but I just have to go with the flow for now.
"Uhm... Asher... You haven't really asked much about me. Don't you want to know much about me? Like what I like and also my dislikes?" This isn't the time to ask him this, but I just want to talk about something so the atmosphere won't be boring.
"I'm not really interested in them, but if you wish to tell me, then it's fine," He shrugs, and I feel like a hot coal was just placed on my heart to burn it. He could've said something else and not sounded like that, right? "Hmm," I slowly nod my head and take a sip from the drink we were served.
"Uhm... Don't you think we should take our relationship to the next level? I know it has not been long since we started dating, and it may too early for you, but I just want to be sure of everything, and I hope you understand how I feel," I say to him, but he stares at me blankly like he didn't understand anything about what I just said.
"Uhm... What I mean is that you can actually tell one of your family members about us. Maybe telling Adelie won't be a bad idea. I've also told my cousin about you, and he's looking forward to meeting you soon," I further explain to him, and he throws his gaze away.
"I'm not ready for that now. If you are not fine with my decision, then I think we should quit being together," He says before he stands up to his feet, and I stand up too
"No, that's not it, please. I didn't mean to put pressure on you, so it's totally fine if you don't feel like it. You can do it at your convenient time. You don't need to ask for a breakup," I quickly say to him, and he nods his head.
"I need to leave now. I have something to attend to," He says to me, and walks away before I can say anything again. Did my words get him pissed?
"Shit! Why did I even say that?" I mumble as I slap myself slightly.
I finally leave the restaurant after spending a few minutes there. The rest of my day was boring, but I finally arrive home in the evening.
"What took you so long to come back home? You told me you weren't going to the office," Nathan asks me once I step into the living room and slump on the chair.
"My sister-in-law wasn't feeling too well, so I had to rush to the hospital to see her, and I went out with my boyfriend after I left the hospital," I reply to him tiredly, and he scoffs.
"You could've just said your friend, right? You are unbelievable," He rolls his eyes as he slumps on the chair too.
"Whatever! What have you been doing all day?" I ask him, and he shrugs.

"Nothing, I've just been here, watching TV to while away time since I had nothing much to do," He shrugs, and I sigh briefly. Nathan is temporarily living with me until he can secure a job. Was thinking of helping him talk to my boss so he can be employed since he qualifies to, but I haven't had the chance yet, since Mr. Raymond has been busy recently.
"You don't look happy. Is everything alright?" He asks, and I nod my head even though I'm not feeling good deep inside me. I thought I would be able to do this even after he told me he doesn't do love, but now I don't even know what to think anymore. I wanted to accept my fate of unrequited love and live with it, but now it's hurting me. I can't help it, even if I don't want to get hurt.
"Come on, talk to me. You don't look happy," He urges me, and I sigh briefly.
"It's Asher..." I pause when he rolls his eyes. From the first day I told him about Asher, he hasn't had any good feelings about our relationship, which I never even cared about, because I don't really need his opinion to make my decision. "I told him today to tell his sister about our relationship, but he got pissed and asked for a breakup," I explain to him sadly, and he leans forward.
"Have you broken up with him now?" He asks, and I scoff.
"Is that even a question? Why should I break up with him because he asked me to? I told you I love him, and..."
"You have to pull yourself together, Cynthia. Why would he ask for a breakup just because you asked him to tell his sister about your relationship with him? And come to think of it, shouldn't his sister be the first one to have known about your relationship? I mean, she should've been the first person he should tell about what's going on between you two," He pauses and scoffs as he runs his fingers through his hair.
"Let me get this straight... Does he have another girlfriend, or doesn't he love you? Because I don't see any reason why he would put that up if he truly loves you. And wait a minute, are you sure he has not been looking for a way to break up with you?" He bombards me with questions, and I bite my lip sadly. As much as I want to tell him about this unrequited love, I can't bring myself to tell him. Nathan is the last person I would reveal my pain to because he would do anything to take it away. He may end up confronting Asher if I tell him about my troubles, and that will make matters even worse.
"Come on, you overthink things. He doesn't have a girlfriend, and I know he loves me. It's just that I asked the question at the wrong time. You know, his sister was sick and he had a lot going on in his mind, so I shouldn't have brought that up today," I defend him immediately, even if I know that wasn't the case.
"But..."
"Just let this go already. Did you make something? I'm famished," I drag myself from the chair and head toward my room. I close the door behind me and break down in tears as soon as I step into my room...
