Chapter 21
Felix parked the car out of sight of the road and a couple of miles away from the area where I saw all of the activity this morning. Well at least this is where I think the activity was. I am still getting the hang of using my powers and it isn't exactly as though I see a map in my head showing me where people are.
It is more like I can use the connection that I feel to the other members of the pack to get a feeling for where they are. I can tell what direction they are relative to me and approximately how far away they are.
That was how I worked out where to look but it was also why I couldn't be 100% sure that this was the right area. It is the right direction though, of that I am almost certain.
"What are we looking for?" Felix asked as we all got out of the car.
"I am not sure, anything unusual." I said.
"This whole thing seems like a waste of time to me." Felix complained.
He wasn't as frustrated as he was when we set off. One the way over here he kept glancing at Ava in the back seat and now he seemed almost calm.
"You would think that because there are no other women for you to screw out here." Ava shouted.
She rolled her eyes at him then turned her back on him. Felix let out a quiet whimper which was so uncharacteristic of him that I had to do a double take.
"I am just happy not to be in maths class." Ryker replied, shrugging his shoulders.
He seemed completely oblivious to what was going on between Ava and Felix. He started walking towards the area that I told them about and the rest of us followed. We all made our way towards the boundary of the pack in an uncomfortable silence.
Felix walked with us for a while trying almost desperately to get Ava to walk beside him. Every time he approached her Ava would move so that either me or Ryker were standing between the two of them.
It took him a few attempts before Felix finally got the hint that Ava didn't want to be anywhere near him. He watched her for a while with a sad look in his eyes before he gave up completely and went to scout ahead. "What is going on between you and Felix?" I asked once he was out of sight.
"He is my mate." She said, her anger clear in her voice.
"I am guessing this isn't happy news." Ryker said.
"Of course not." She growled.
"Why not." I said, I know it was a stupid question but I needed to get her to open up to us.
"He turned eighteen months ago. That means that he has known that he is my mate for months and rather than saying anything to me he continued to mock me and sleep with as many other women as possible." She said. Her anger was growing by the second.
"I think he was planning to wait until I turned eighteen before acknowledging me or rejecting me. Then you turned out to be his brother's mate and he changed his mind. I guess he couldn't deal with being so close to me without claiming me." She said. She was still angry but there was sadness there too.
"So what are you going to do about him?" I asked.
"I honestly don't know. Part of me wants to reject him as revenge over the way he treated me but I have always wanted to meet my mate and fall in love. Why did I have to get someone like him as my mate?" Ava said. I could feel the tears pooling in her eyes.
"I don't know but if you do decide to forgive him then you should absolutely make him pay for what he did first." I replied.
She looked over to me and smiled, she opened her mouth to reply but something caught her eye. Her whole face changed in an instant, any trace of happiness left her face so I knew then that Felix was heading in our direction. "What do you want?" She asked.
"I think I can see where the rogues were apprehended. The area is empty now but the ground is disrupted and I can smell the scent of lots of different wolves in the air." He said.
I nodded my head in acknowledgement before walking forward at a faster pace. I wanted to get this done as quickly as possible and get out of here before anyone saw us. I didn't want to have to try explaining our presence here to Elijah. It wasn't keeping a secret from him, I was just stopping him from worrying about me. At least that is what I told myself to make me feel better.
As soon as we turned the last corner before the border I knew that Felix was right. I could smell the scent of at least a dozen werewolves, some of them I recognised as being members of our pack. I could smell the pack's scent mixed in with about a third of the scent trails. What was strange though was that none of the scents here belonged to rogues.
Rogues didn't have a scent corresponding to their pack, any werewolf would be able to recognise it instantly. All of the scents here had a pack scent attached to them, there had been wolves here from three of the surrounding packs. This must be what they thought was odd about the attack. What possible reason could a handful of wolves from three different packs want to infiltrate a nearby pack for? It might make sense if they were doing reconnaissance for an attack but that wouldn't make sense given these packs shared history. They were more likely to attack each other than to work together.
I could see why they were worried, if these packs were working together then we would be in serious trouble. We were the largest pack by quite a margin but we were no match for all three of them working together. Not to mention that these packs were meant to be our allies. The whole thing was very strange.
We spent a few more minutes looking around the area for clues but there wasn't much left to find. Elijah's security detail had taken everything with them. The only thing left was a few drops of blood and the fading scents of the werewolves that had been here.
On the walk back to the car everyone was a lot more positive than on the walk over here. Ava even let Felix stand near her without rolling her eyes or shouting at him but she wouldn't let him touch her. Every time he tried to take her hand she snatched it away and gave him a warning stare.
"So what do you want to do now?" Ryker asked as we approached Felix's car.Content © copyrighted by NôvelDrama.Org.
"I don't know, I guess we could go back to school." I suggested.
"Not a chance. We skipped school so let's do something fun." Ryker said.
"What do you have in mind?" I asked.
"What about going to see a movie? There is a new horror film out and it is meant to be terrifying." Felix suggested. "Yessss." Ava squealed.
