“Ms. Veil Smith. You’re up next!” The speaker announced.
“Huh!!” Veil asked. Was it her or someone bearing the same name as her? Why was it her turn now? She had only been sitting there for five minutes. Some too many other people came before her, so, why was she next?
As she stood up and confidently approached the door, she knew that others had the same thoughts running in their minds. Probably she was amongst the top firsts on their list.
But! why was her name called, instead of her number?
She noticed a lot of people staring at her with disdain and it made her feel strange in a way. She forced a smile in other to clear the air around her before walking in.
As soon as she was out of sight, a few women turned to each other.
“She’s the last person to walk into this room, yet she gets called before us all, and that too, by name?” One blonde asked.
“I think she must be acquainted with the CEO. Hmm! Lucky her.” Another, a short-haired brunette murmured with a fixed gaze on the door Veil had just walked through.
“Hell no! A man of such caliber wouldn’t go for such.” Another woman said with hate.
“Why? She’s beautiful and poised…” The short-haired brunette argued.
“She’s beautiful, yet so simple. Men of caliber don’t settle for such. They go for elegance and class. Sophistication. Women like Sophia De’ Alonzo.”
“You mean the president’s daughter?” The first blonde asked.
“Yes! Rumour has it that they are in a relationship.”
“Hey! Keep it down, there are cameras everywhere.” The blonde whispered.
During the interview process, Veil sat opposite two ladies, both blondes and a gent. While one of the ladies was older, the other looked to be in her early thirties. The older blonde was going through Veil’s resume and gave a smile at intervals. After about five minutes, she dropped the file on the desk and met Veil’s gaze.
“Your resume says a lot, you’re exceptionally good. The qualities you’ve been recommended for are exactly what we need, but not in the marketing department.”
Veil gave a hint of confusion at the lady’s statement.
Understanding her confusion, the older blonde smiled.
“The CEO needs a personal secretary and your resume says you’re perfect for the job.
Veil could barely understand what was going on. She had applied for the office of a marketer, not…”
“You’re to answer to the CEO alone, pay is Five hundred dollars, half the money paid upfront and the other half paid at the end of the month. If you’re interested please sign this contract.” pushes a document to a bewildered Veil.
Veil was hesitant. The offer felt too good to be true.
“Can I think about it?”
“The moment you step out of that door, someone else is gladly embracing the job” Seeing the perplexed look on Veil’s face, the lady smiled. “Don’t worry, it’s not a dream. You earned it. Your resume is great.” She watched Veil smile and it moved hers as well.
“In front of you is a document stating that you are an employee of RM Groups. Now, will you please sign over here, Ms. Veil?”
“Sure!” In the heat of the moment, Veil took out her pen, she quickly read through the first five lines of the file, and seeing the lady was correct, she put her signature.
Veil flung the door to the apartment open.
“I got the job,” Veil screamed with excitement.
Elated, June danced with excitement and then rippling with curiosity, she hurried to Veil.
“Tell me how it went” June pulled her by the wrist to the couch. “In detail.” She added.
Veil gave a light laugh and then claimed the seat.
“So… I got an even more exciting offer.”
Veil saw June frown in her perplexity and she laughed again.
“They thought my resume was great, so, they asked if I could work directly for the CEO,” Veil explained.
“You’re joking… right?” This was way too unbelievable. Even Veil had given the same reaction to the news when she was told.
Veil chuckled lightly at June’s reaction. “No, I’m not.”
“Oh! My God!” June exclaimed. “We need to drink to this.”….
The rest of the day was spent in good spirits. At night before going to bed, Veil called her mom and gave her the good news. She asked of her dad and the reply she got from her mom wasn’t so pleasing. She dropped the call dispirited. But when she thought of her new job, she could only force a smile.
Veil woke up as early as 6:00 AM. It was going to be her first day at work and she was so excited to be at work. She dressed up in a pair of suit pants, a tee shirt, and a fitting Jacket. She joined June for an ample amount of breakfast and then hurried out afterward. She flagged down a taxi once she was outside. Staring at the busy road through the windowsill, she was all smiles. And the weather seemed to compliment her mood. Bright and beautiful!
“We are here ma’am!” Veil stepped out of the car with a bright smile and then paid the driver.
With a confidence that was hard to not notice, she walked into the building, attracting the kind of attention that she didn’t need. This was the real her, confident and bold. As she walked in, she saw the gentleman from yesterday. She smiled as she noticed him approaching her.
“Good morning missus Veil.” He returned her smile.
“Good morning Mr…’
“Simon! The name is Simon.” The gentleman offered.
“Congratulations on your new job.” He added.Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
“Thank You.” Veil appreciated.
“Let me show you to your new office.”
Veil nodded and then followed behind him. Their departure was followed by side talks.
“I heard she’s the CEO’s new assistant.” A young honey-blonde Lady muttered to the young man next to her desk.
“Really? But the CEO has never had an assistant….” The man replied.
“I heard she’s got really good qualifications.” Another girl added.
“Hurry keep quiet. The CEO is here.” Someone announced, and the whole first floor went into a frenzy.
The entrance door flung open and in walked a group of men in black suits, but amongst them, one man in a blue shirt stood out. With dark short hair, the face of a model, and the body of an athlete, he caught the attention of many. On his entrance, the entire hall went into silence. Only the sound of keyboards could be heard. The other men in the group were his bodyguards. He was escorted into his private elevator by two guards, while the rest used a different elevator.
The elevator dinged open on the sixteenth floor, and he stepped out along with the guards. The elevator in the opposite direction also opened at the same time, and the other bodyguards stepped out as well, joining the rest as they matched behind the young man.
