Chapter 62
Chapter 62
"Do you think I don't understand? Doing what I like is a great thing, but don't you know that there's a
thing called responsibility?" Lenny said.
"I know that you have a big responsibility to your family. All the members of the Foster family pin their
hopes on you. You're carrying such a heavy burden, and it's a long-term, arduous task. But you don't
have to deny yourself everything you like all the time. For example, if you like eating sweets, then go
have some. If you like watching movies, then go to the theater and watch one. I mean, you can be
responsible without depriving yourself of simple joys, can't you?"
"Some people can be indulgent. Others simply can't," Lenny replied lightly. "You may go now, and don't
come in here again unless I tell you to."
He asked her to leave.
Scarlet pursed her lips. It was useless to persuade him.
He had built an indestructible wall around himself.
He had made himself look tough and invincible. It seemed that he had no weaknesses and that he
could solve any difficulties that came his way.
Just as an ant hole could collapse a long dike, he was afraid that one moment of gratification would
ruin everything that he had built over the years. He had to be and do his best all the time because one
misstep could cause irreparable damage.
She knew what was weighing on his mind.
But he was only thirty years old.
It seemed like he had everything. Many people admired and worshiped him, but no one really
understood the desolate world in his heart.
He had never been willful. He took over the family business because it was what his parents wanted.
He focused on the Foster Group and did everything to bring honor to the Foster family, even if it meant
putting his own dreams and aspirations last.
He never complained or even retorted. At the end of the day, he just sacrificed.
He never complained or even retorted. At the end of the day, he just sacrificed.
He had given up so much that his heart had turned to stone.
But why did her heart ache for him?
He didn't care, so why should she?
Before shutting the door behind her, Scarlet looked at Lenny one last time. He was back at his desk in
front of his computer and going over piles upon piles of documents.
He knitted his brows, braced his elbow on the desk, and then massaged his forehead. He seemed to
have encountered something difficult.
Even on weekends, he couldn't enjoy life. He just remained buried under a mountain of work.
Looking away, Scarlet closed the door.
At the same time, Lenny slowly raised his head.
Scarlet's words were like stones thrown into the dead lake that was his heart, causing ripples that
traveled and persisted.
Simple joys.
Those were the most difficult to have.
Sitting on the sofa and stewing in her own frustration, Scarlet didn't expect to receive a call from Evie.
She urgently needed a batch of cloth and had to go to the material market to buy it right away.
Someone was especially assigned to perform this task, but this weekend, that person went to his
hometown to spend time with his child.
Since Evie couldn't find someone else to run the errand, she called Scarlet.
"You're the most useless person in the studio right now, Scarlet. If you can't even do this trivial thing
well, then you really should consider leaving and looking for a different job."
Evie seized the opportunity to plant the idea of resigning in Scarlet's mind. ConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .
Scarlet cherished the chance to learn from Marlon. Lots of other students would give anything to be in
her position, so she wouldn't give up her job easily. She still had a lot to learn.
"Okay, I'll be right there."
"Hurry up. The cloth has to be sent to the studio before four o'clock this afternoon."
Scarlet took a look at the cloudy weather outside. It looked like it was going to rain soon.
She grabbed an umbrella and left.
When Lenny finished his work and came out of the study, he immediately looked for Scarlet and didn't
find her anywhere.
"Where is she?"
"It seems that something happened at work, so she went out," a servant replied.
At four o'clock, Scarlet brought the cloth to the studio. Before she could sit down and rest, Evie ordered
her to do something else.
She had to print out all the materials for tomorrow's meeting.
She had been busy all afternoon dealing with her work. In the evening, Evie called again and told her to
prepare digital copies of the customer data, sort them out, and then send them out through e-mail.
Scarlet turned on the computer again and began working on the task.
She didn't stop until eight o'clock in the evening. She was tired and hungry.
She was finally done sorting out the documents and was about to e-mail them out, but then her
computer screen turned blue and froze. Her heart instantly leapt to her throat.
"What? I was just about to e-mail the documents. God, are you kidding me?"
Scarlet buried her face in her hands. She was so exhausted and frustrated that she almost burst into
tears.
What was she supposed to do now?
