Chapter 53
Nadine:
I was dead to the world. There was a huge wall between me and consciousness, me and reality. I tried to scale the wall but I kept falling down. Sometimes I didn’t even know if I wanted to wake up. It was scary on the other side, reality was a monster with horns that was trying to kill me. I tried to scale the wall again, determined this time, and when I did, I didn’t fall. I did it very gently so as to avoid mistakes and finally I made it to the other side. My eyes flickered open.
“Ahh, you’re awake,” she said. Through misty eyes, I could see that she was a nurse. I struggled to remember what had happened, but I couldn’t. I tried to move, but I ached all over. I let out a groan of pain.
“Hey, hey, hey,” the nurse cautioned. “Relax. You were hurt pretty bad, okay. Relax. You’ll be fine.”
“Where am I?” I asked.
“At the hospital,” the nurse said, cocking her head. “The central hospital.”
Central hospital. I tried to connect the dots, but I still couldn’t. I knew Anna was right here. She was still recovering from her bone cancer. I hoped she was okay; it had been a while since I had gone in to see her.
“What happened?” I said. My voice was very weak. Even though I couldn’t hear it, the nurse stooped over me and she was hearing me.
“You fell,” she said. “I’m not exactly sure what happened, ma’am, but the lady that came with the ambulance said you fell down a flight of stairs. You have a broken arm and a fractured skull. Also, some ribs were broken, which is why you found it extremely painful when you tried to move. But these are nothing that cannot heal with time. All you need is proper treatment and adequate care, and you’ll be up and about again, okay?”
She said the last statement with a broad smile.
“A lady followed the ambulance that brought me here?” I thought to myself. “That must have been … Natasha! Fell down a flight of stairs?!?! I didn’t fucking fall, I was pushed by that violent, raping, animal, Clayton. What the fuck?!?!”
My mind screamed these thoughts but I remained mute on the outside. I tried to move again, but I couldn’t. The nurse was right, my ribs were broken. My sides ached, and my head throbbed.
“This is too much,” I managed to say to the nurse.
“What?” She asked.
“It’s … too much,” I repeated, “the pain.”
“Oh, dear,” she said. “Hold on, I’ll get you some painkillers. Meanwhile, is there any family or friend that you can contact. The lady that came with the ambulance left shortly after. I’m guessing you don’t know her that much.”
“I know her,” I said. “We’re not close. Please, get the painkillers.”
The nurse scrambled out of the ward and came back with an injection.
“This is going to knock you out,” she said, holding the syringe up for me to see. I looked at the clear, colorless fluid in the syringe. My head pounded.
“I’m ready,” I said to her and she moved closer with it.
Enzo:
I had been trying Nadine’s number since she left, but she had obviously been ignoring me. Some time at noon, I got a call from a strange number. I never reject calls; it could be business, it could be an emergency. In this case, it was sort of an emergency. Apparently, Nadine had been involved in an accident in the house – falling down a flight of stairs – and was at the central hospital. Since I was the last number that called her, the hospital thought to alert me.
“The Central hospital?” I said. “I’ll be there right away.”
I hopped into my car and drove by myself to the hospital. When I got there, I was quite confused because I did not know how to introduce myself.
“And who are you to the patient?” A nurse asked.Copyright Nôv/el/Dra/ma.Org.
“I’m her friend, actually,” I said. “I actually received a call from this hospital that she was involved in an accident.”
“This hospital?” I was asked.
“Yeah,” I replied, already getting impatient.
“Hold on,” she said, raising her index finger before placing a call. She asked for my name and then directed me to the ward where Nadine was. When I entered, Nadine was asleep. A nurse had given her some injections to knock her out and help with the pain. Even in slumber, she looked pretty torn up, but still was no less beautiful. I realized how much I was in love with her. I decided to wait around till she awoke. I remembered that I had come to see her sister, Anna, a while ago, and that she was still in the hospital. I wondered if Anna knew and thought of going to say hi to her before changing my mind. After waiting for nearly two hours, Nadine finally woke up.
“Enzo?” She said with uncertainty.
“Hi, my love,” I said, standing by her side, my hand touching her face lightly. “How do you feel?”
“Like shit,” she said, and gave a small chuckle. “I feel a little better than I did earlier when I awoke. I’m not in as much pain as then.”
“That’s good to know, Nadine,” I said. “How did it happen? I was told that it was an accident.”
“It was no accident, Enzo,” she said, her voice fierce. “This was a deliberate act of assault.”
“What? What do you even mean by that?” I asked.
“I mean, your beast of a brother pushed me down the stairs,” she said. “When I got back to the house after leaving the hotel, he began to question me. When I wasn’t forthcoming with the answers that he wanted, he just fucking pushed me.”
“Oh, no,” I said. “That’s brutish of him. And where is he now?”
