Chapter Twenty-six
“My lady, is anything the matter?” Joanna asked, staring at her with a look of concern etched on her face.
Audrey was coming over!?
Cassy was in a daze. She knew that a day like this was coming but she had never thought of it.
Cassy exhaled and slouched, tilting her head backwards slightly.
“You are scaring me, Cassy,” Joanna said standing beside her.
She sighed again, ignoring her.
She had a lot on her mind. She needed to do something about her sister’s arrival.
“Kay–” she did not allow her to finish as she shoved the paper in front of her.
Joanna glanced at her and then at the paper before taking it from her.
Her eyes darted to and fro on the paper as she read it.
She exhaled before dropping it back on the table.
Although she did not know much about the nature of their relationship, Joanna was aware that there was a strain.
He would not have dinner with her nor would he visit her. He would have her stay in her room all day.
Who was she kidding? He had a concubine! How could they possibly have a good relationship?
“What am I going to do now?” Cassy asked aloud.
She was beginning to regret writing that she needed company. She knew she needed company but she did not want her sister.
She did not even expect him to send anyone and if she was going to need anyone, it had to be Jasmine. She had been with her since when she was younger, she understood her and always helped her.
But for Audrey, she was not sure she was going to understand especially now that she had not seen her for a while now. She did not have any idea how much she had changed.
She loved her sister but Audrey was someone who overreacted and had a wide mouth. She could not keep anything in her heart especially when she was sad or happy.
Cassy sighed and stood up and folded her arms across her chest as she began to pace to and fro the short distance between the table and the dressing table.
What was she going to do now?
Joanna could understand Cassy’s situation.
Although she did not know the true nature of their relationship, she could tell that there was a strain.
He never had dinner with her nor did he ever visit her. He always had her in her room, restricting her from doing what she really wanted while his…
Who was she kidding? He had a mistress who he loved!
She understood that she could not allow anyone from her family to know about their relationship. It was surely going to cause an issue.
“I think I have an idea,” Joanna spoke up and Cassy stopped pacing as she focused her attention on the lass, waiting for her to say something. This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - ©.
“What if you tell them that there is an issue in the palace and no outsider can visit for now,” she uttered and looked up at Cassy who scoffed and began pacing again. Her arms are behind her now.
“Do you think it’s that easy? My father was the late Alpha’s beta, he knows almost everything going on in the palace,” she revealed to her handmaid.
Cassy was free to say whatever she wanted as Emma had decided that she wanted to help in the kitchen and she was grateful.
At least she was not going to fear that word was going to leak out.
Joanna did not know much about Cassy but from the gossip she’d heard around the palace, she knew that there was nothing really good.
She suddenly got an idea after pondering for a while but she did not know if Cassy was going to take it and most of all, the alpha. What was going to be their reaction?
Joanna cleared her throat.
“I have another suggestion, Cassy but I don’t know if you are going to take it,”
“Go on,” she nodded and went to sit. Her legs were beginning to give out. She had been moving around for too long.
Joanna took in a deep breath before speaking,
“If you do not want her to know then you would have to deceive her,” Joanna wanted to speak carefully.
Cassy’s eyebrows furrowed. “What do you mean?”
“You can speak to the alpha and let him know about your predicament,”
“Are you saying that the alpha and I should put up an act?” Cassy quizzed to clarify if what she was thinking was wrong and Joanna nodded.
Cassy burst into laughter shaking her head before stopping abruptly.
“I am afraid not. He would never agree to it,”
“Do not draw conclusions too quickly. Ask him first,” Joanna implored and handed Cassy a spoon. “Let’s go to his study after you have breakfast.”
She exhaled and dug into the meal. She finished quickly and sat up.
She needed to come up with something quickly so she could give a reply to her father.
“What if he does not concur?”
“We should try first. And if he doesn’t, we can think of what to do next,” Joanna advised, clearing the table.
“If it does, then you have to act like a couple and live in the same bedchamber for as long as she remains here.”
“What!?” the thought of living in the same bedchamber with him was scary to her.
Just when she thought it would never happen again, why does the moon goddess always have a way of punishing her?
Joanna nodded and winked at her, causing her to roll her eyes and Joanna to laugh.
She sucked in a deep breath and released it before rising.
“Then, let’s leave,”
Joanna eyed the dress Cassy was putting on. She had dressed up shabbily because she initially did not plan to leave her room but now she was leaving, Joanna could not allow her to go out of the room especially when she was going to see Kai.
Who knows if they were going to come across his mistress?
“What is it?”
“You are not going anywhere like that,” Joanna rose up and pushed Cassy back to sit down.
“Your majesty,” Ben bowed and rose.
“I did not hear from you yesterday,” Kai’s head was buried in the file he was reading.
“I had to take care of some issues, your majesty,” he impounded. “The ship containing the goods that were to be sent to the blue moon pack was attacked by the pirate pack. I had to go take a look and I am just returning.”
Kai nodded and dropped the file on the desk.
“I see. You did well,” he said without looking at Ben.
Ben’s face contorted into a frown as he wondered what was wrong with the alpha.
He rarely or almost never praised him.
Kai spoke before he could finish processing his thoughts.
“Sit,” he gestured to the chair in front of him, surprising Ben more.
Ben hesitated. Did he do anything wrong?
Kai glanced at him questioningly and he quickly sat down.
Kai chuckled like he could read Ben’s thoughts but he was only sensing his fear.
“Fear not. You just did not answer my question yesterday,” he told him, pouring him a cup of tea.
Ben’s frown deepened. “What question?”
Kai glared at him but he did not find it to be scary as he had a hint of pink colour on his cheeks. When did he start blushing?
He had already gotten wind of what he was talking about.
He nodded his head repeatedly.
“Oh. I remember now, the one about you– your friend,” he quickly switched his words when he saw Kai’s look.
Ben cleared his throat and sat properly.
“From what I can remember, the both of you were in the carriage and suddenly the carriage entered a bumpy road. Hmm–” he exhaled, acting like he was thinking whilst glancing at him from the corner of his eyes.
Kai glared at him. He knew what his friend was doing. He was only trying to pull words out of his mouth but Kai knew he was not going to get it.
“What do you think?” Ben asked, facing the alpha and continued when Kai did not reply.
“She was not disgusted by you. I know that’s what you thought but have you ever heard of the word ‘motion sickness’ he questioned, raising his eyebrows at him.
“Yes. Mother always had it when–” it dawned on him the reason why she had vomited and a smile appeared on his face.
“What’s with that smile?” Ben asked, smirking.
Kai’s face immediately went back to ‘default’ mode. Stoic and emotionless.
He cleared his throat. “Don’t you have anything else to do?”
“Yes. I was about to leave now,” Ben stood up and was heading towards the door when Kai’s words halted him.
“Take it as we didn’t discuss anything,”
Ben nodded with a knowing smile and winked before leaving.
Kai face palmed himself immediately after he left. What was wrong with him?
He surprisingly felt relieved after knowing that she had not thrown up because she kissed him. He was beginning to feel disgusted.
He could not take the thought off his mind for long.
Why does he think of her? Maybe because he pitied her?
After their fight the previous day, he spent the day with Isabella but he still felt guilty for the way he had treated her.
He had gone to her room that evening to check on her but he had stopped when he heard her crying and complaining to someone who he came to know her name was Joanna.
“What did I ever do wrong to him? Why must he always oppose me? I don’t want him to love me romantically, I never asked for it. All I ask is for him to treat me well.
I only want to feel wanted and not invisible but all that I experience is what I do not want. What did I ever do wrong for this predicament to come upon me? Why has the moon goddess decided to curse me? Have I done anything wrong!?”
He felt bad immediately and was about to leave when he heard her.
“Why am I so unfortunate? Why?” he could hear her sniffing.
Concluding he had heard enough he returned back to his bedchamber where he met Isabella.
“Your majesty,” the voice of a guard brought him out of his thoughts.
“The file you requested from the former beta,” he placed the file on the table and bowed.
Kai nodded and picked up the file. He looked up at the man as a thought formed in his head.
“Find information on the beta’s family. I want every single thing,” he ordered.
“Yes, your majesty,” the guard bowed and left the room.
Hearing Cassy pour her heart out to her handmaid woke up something in him.
He was now interested in knowing more about her. But from the little he knew, he understood that everyone in the family was not on good terms. The encounter they had when she first met him was enough to tell him that but he needed more information.
“Let me in!”
“No one is allowed in,”
“But we just saw a guard just walk in,”
He could hear a commotion coming from outside. They were arguing loudly which was disturbing him.
“Dan!” he called out and one of the guards standing outside rushed in. “What is going on?”
Dan opened his mouth to speak but Cassy spoke, walking in,
“They were preventing me from seeing you,”
She stole his breath away immediately he saw her.
She was dressed up in a beautiful peach gown, the corset around her chest pushed her breast up bringing her cleavage into view. She had her hair up in a rolled bun with pins adorning them.
In fact, she was glowing.
Kai exhaled and snapped out of his daze. He was not supposed to be staring at her like that.
With a wave of his hand, he dismissed Dan.
He gestured for her to sit and she did, her handmaid stood behind her.
“I would hit the nail on the head,” she spoke before he could. “My sister is going to pay a visit.” she allowed him to take in her words.
Kai’s eyebrows furrowed.
“She can visit if you want. Do you want a room, banquet or anything prepared for–”
“I wish that was the issue,” she cut in, confusing him more.
“Then what is it?”
Cassy looked down at her fingers. “She does not know about our relationship. They think we are a… thing.”
“So what are you trying to imply?”
She looked up at him with those beautiful eyes.
“I want you to help me,”
